A Florida Trip the Tourist Attractions in Saint Augustine Beach
Are Especially Worthy of A Detour: |
| |
| Though it may not be the largest or most populated
location, San Agustin; its original name, is a favorite spot
for those interested in beautiful architecture. It is also attributed
with being a crucial site for the Civil Rights Movement between
1963 and 1964. While historical in nature, there are various
adventuresome activities to take in as well. Continue reading
and find out why on a Florida trip the tourist attractions in
Saint Augustine Beach are especially worthy of a detour.
The Cathedral Basilica is a must see for those interested
in exceptional architecture combined with history. Construction
of the structure deemed a Unites States historical landmark
in 1970, took over five years. It continues to be the seat
of the Catholic Bishop of St. Augustine.
Remaining in the bell tower is a bell that actually belonged
to a British cathedral responsible for the burning of this
particular church many times in its history.
Most would certainly not miss the chance to drink from the
fountain of youth, storied to have been discovered by Ponce
de Leon in his expeditions.
The Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park was built
on the spot where he was said to have landed. Although the
stories are romanticized, why would anyone miss the chance
to take a drink from the waters mentioned in so many novels.
Believe it or not, the Ripley's Odditorium is also located
here for those with a curious side. The structure was built
in 1887, and once served as a hotel, but was purchased and
opened as the museum in 1950. Better known as the Castle,
it remains a permanent residence for all of the collected
treasures and is also rumored to be haunted as well.
For a bit of adventure on the trip, the Alligator Farm is
the place to visit. It remains the oldest attraction in the
area, having opened in 1893.
There are over twenty varieties of crocodiles, but also is
home to other types of birds, reptiles and some mammals.
Hotel accommodations in the area are excellent and the beaches
are some of the best in Florida. Staying in this location
could be a great getaway; it is in a perfect position to visit
surrounding attractions in Jacksonville and Orlando as well.
It may be difficult to find time to pull away from the many
sites in the area, but do not forget to take a look at the
Atlantic when you visit.
